Synopsis
An unbreakable father-daughter bond sets into motion a young woman’s determination to follow her dreams. Set on the beautiful Kenyan island of Lamu, this family drama follows the story of Subira as she struggles against local customs and an arranged marriage. Raised in an orthodox Muslim community her tyrannical mother wants her to follow tradition, learn household chores and aim to be a good wife. However, Subira has different ideas - she wants to live by her own rules no matter what people say. But will her free-spirited nature allow her to live life the way she desires and follow her dreams?
The film is based on director Sippy Chadha’s own experience and vividly captures the paradox of modernity versus tradition. Subira was awarded the European African Film Festivals Award at the 2018 Zanzibar International Film Festival.
