Mohamed Ben Attia | Tunisia, Belgium, France, Qatar 2018 | Tunisian Arabic with English subtitles | 15 | 1h44m

Synopsis

A Tunisian couple are nearing retirement age, but times are hard, and money is tight. Their life revolves around their only son Sami, who is preparing for his high school exams. The boy’s debilitating migraines are a cause for concern to his devoted parents. When things appear to be getting better, Sami suddenly disappears from the family apartment without warning. Riadh goes on a tireless journey to locate his son, but his fruitless search forces him to confront some harsh home truths of his own.

Weldi premiered at Cannes in the Director’s Fortnight, with Mohammed Dhrif winning a Best Actor Award for his role as the loving father. The film was co-produced by famous Belgian duo Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne and shows a different, more nuanced narrative than the stereotypes our news channels offer on extremism.
